Warm, unhurried lessons in a calm home studio near Exeter, from first notes to confident performance. More than thirty years of teaching experience, paced gently to each child.
Hello and welcome!
Lessons are calm, structured and encouraging. Pupils learn to read music and understand what they are playing, building genuine skill and the quiet confidence that comes with it.
Sit at the piano, see how it feels, and have a chat together. No cost, no obligation, just a relaxed first introduction.
Begin with ten 30-minute lessons to build solid foundations including looking at reading, rhythm and a first few real pieces. A wide range of games and exercises keep lessons varied and fun.
As confidence builds, lessons extend to 40 minutes, with extra theory, technique and pieces your child actually wants to play.
Optional graded exams taken only when your child is genuinely ready for them. For those wishing to take grades (ABRSM) or pass music exams at school, my pass rate is 100%.
A relaxed first meeting to see if lessons feel right.
Builds solid foundations in reading, rhythm and first pieces.
Longer lessons as your child progresses, at the same friendly rate.
Lessons paced to your child, never to a syllabus or a stopwatch.
Pupils learn to read music and understand it, not just copy what they hear.
A relaxed, familiar setting near Exeter where children feel at ease.
Optional graded exams, only when the time is right.
Julia is a wonderful piano teacher. I had the pleasure of being taught by her for six years whilst I was at secondary school. She is very kind, patient and encouraging as well as a lovely person, and a great teacher. I quickly progressed through the grade levels thanks to her tuition, having not had much of a musical background, and was exposed to a variety of genres — jazz, classical and pop. Julia made playing the piano a great joy for me and I couldn’t recommend her highly enough.
My 10-year-old daughter, Isla, looks forward to her piano lessons with Julia each week, and I’m delighted with the progress she has made. From the beginning, Julia’s lessons included a great mixture of technique, theory and lots of fun. She is enormously encouraging and enthusiastic, and has a gift for finding just the thing to keep Isla interested. We’ve really enjoyed the variety of music Isla has brought home to practise. Highly recommended!
Take one 7-year-old: male, rugby-obsessed, square-handed. Add one inspirational music teacher, a substantial quantity of patience, much encouragement, laughter and sympathy. The result? A young man with a passion for piano (and rugby), a decent Higher pass in music and a number of highly surprising party pieces. His afternoon lessons, following a school day, were never a chore but something to look forward to. Julia has the rare ability to communicate enthusiasm and radiate warmth to the least likely of candidates.
Tell me a little about your child and what they would like to play. I will usually reply within 48 hours.
